Even with the closure of Navy Base Charleston a few years back, there is still a strong military presence in Charleston.  The US Coast Guard, US Air Force and Naval Weapon Station are located in the Charleston area.

The biggest military presence is the Charleston Air Force Base in North Charleston. Starting as a civilian airport in the 1930's, the War Department took control in 1942 and it has been a vital base on the east coast ever since. Today the base is home to the 437th and 315th Military Airlift Wing. The base provides valuable cargo transport support for the war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
